Special Historical Notes and Other Institutional Information

In 1990, the State Building Commission and the Department of Administration requested a study be done to determine bed needs for the growing prison population.  In December of 1990, the results were published in the State of Wisconsin Correctional System's Development Plan and brought about a $145.4 million building program, which added 1,684 beds to the Wisconsin prison system.  JCI, a medium-security adult prison, was activated to receive inmates on May 6, 1996, and an 150-bed barrack-style unit was activated in October of 1997.
