Mission statement
To protect society from unwarranted acts, both now and in the future, which offenders referred to us for the purpose of habilitation may commit. The primary way we can fulfill that responsibility, as far as the future is concerned, is through a program of “productive adjustment,” education, team building, and by use of positive role modeling.

Special historical notes and other institutional information
The State of Wisconsin purchased the facility in 1995 to be used as a juvenile correctional institution for non-assaultive male youthful offenders. The main grounds and the majority of the buildings were originally constructed in the mid-1900s. The facility originally served as a Jesuit High School and later as a Lutheran Preparatory High School. Due to the decreases of juvenile offender population in the Division of Juvenile Corrections (DJC), the Legislature in 1997 authorized DOC to temporally utilize this facility for the Division of Adult Institutions (DAI).

DJC contracted 302 beds at the Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution (PDCI) to the Division of Adult Institutions to serve as a medium-security correctional institution for youthful offenders with adult sentences in the age range of 15 to 21 years. PDCI became operational on July 3, 1997. In December 2001, the operating capacity was increased from 302 to 326 youthful offenders. On July 1, 2003, PDCI transitioned from the DJC to DAI. The age restriction of the inmates was lifted for PDCI at that time. The operating capacity was increased to 424 in August 2003. PDCI continues to operate as a medium security correctional facility within DAI.
