Purpose Statement

Robert E. Ellsworth Correctional Center (REEC) provides female inmates with a safe and secure environment that is gender-responsive and that utilizes gender-specific guiding principles to assist in positive growth through treatment, education, and appropriate supervision, thereby fostering successful reentry to their families and communities upon release.

Special Historical Notes and Other Institution Information

REEC was built in 1954 as partof the Southern Wisconsin Center and originally called Atherton Hall.  In 1989, the Department of Corrections converted the then vacant building to a correctional facility, which was renamed Robert E. Ellsworth Correctional Center after Mr. Robert Ellsworth who had an illustrious career with the Department from 1954 to 1986. REECC and the Southern Wisconsin Center are located on more than 25 acres of land in the Township of Dover near Union Grove.

REECC is a minimum-securityfacility that provides an extensive array of programs, such as education, alcohol/drug abuse treatment, re-entry, family reintegration, grief counselling, religious instruction and more. Inmates are also given the opportunity to volunteer for various community service programs. Local communities, non-profits, and other government agencies have benefited from thousands of hours of inmate community service.
